Kane didn’t turn up to Spurs’ training yesterday and it’s now being reported that he has no intention of returning until he’s sold. Kane’s just turned 28 years old and is without silverware. He’s already regarded as Spurs’ best ever player and a legend but is now trying to force a move. He signed a six year contract with Spurs in 2018 and obviously hoped that within that time he could have won something. But with two seasons outside of the top four, he’s lost faith and wants to move away.
However, it’s not like he hasn’t had the chance to win things at Spurs. He’s reached a Champions League final, two League Cup finals and a semi-final and two FA Cup semi-finals as well as 2.5 title races. He’s also had a World Cup semi-final and Euros final on the international stage.
He has three Premier League golden boots, a World Cup one and a playmaker of the season award also. He is sixteen goals away from being England’s all time top scorer, he’s 56 away from being Spur’s all time scorer and is 94 away from Shearer’s Premier League record.
Success can look different for different people. Look at Oscar. He went to China at just 26 and could have been an incredible player if he stayed in Europe. But he wanted to earn as much money as possible for his family and I’m sure he and his family will think he’s a success and has changed the future of his entire family and future generations.
From a footballing standpoint he was still successful with two Premier Leagues, a League Cup and the Europa League from his time at Chelsea.
Everyone wants to win things and winning silverware is really about legacy. How you’re remembered and talked about in 30+ years time. How is Kane going to be best remembered? A one club man who finished as Premier League, Spurs and England record goal scorer. Hopefully with a trophy thrown in and potentially captaining England to a long-awaited World Cup or Euros.
Or a player who leaves at 28, sells out to an oil owned club to win a few trophies that they’d win without him anyway? And even when he wins something, this will be the reaction and how it’s viewed.
most Spurs fans would have held nothing against Kane for leaving. At this point, I want him to leave, provided we get a good fee which we can then reinvest and improve the squad overall. I still think that from his perspective, staying is the right thing to do. But if he does want to leave, he can and I get it.
But in 20+ years time, it’s Spurs fans who will be talking about Kane, not City fans while celebrating yet another Premier League. Kane will just be one of many players who helped win the league, unless they win the Champions League. So in terms of wanting a legacy, leaving Spurs on bad terms will ruin how he’s remembered completely.
This isn’t how it’s meant to end.
